Northern Cyprus Print and Electronic media | Tv and Radio channels of TRNC

According to advertising and media prospects, 4.23 billion people worldwide are mass media consumers. The number of global viewers is expected to increase steadily, reaching approximately 4.36 billion in the near future.

Therefore It is undeniable that in today’s modernity, media plays a vital part in our society, whether it be moulding the minds of future generations or depicting nations and reflecting their societal norms values.

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus: (TRNC)

Cyprus, an island in the Mediterranean ruled by the United Kingdom for centuries, became a sovereign country in 1960. For decades, the Turkish Cypriots have constantly disputed with Greek Cypriots, trying to achieve independence.

Until the Turkish military took matters into its own hands and declared Northern Cyprus (TRNC) the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in 1983, still the country is regarded as a self-proclaimed nation under Turkish Occupation Internationally.

Media of Northern Cyprus:

Both state-owned and for-profit enterprises operate television, periodicals, and newspapers, relying on advertising, subscriptions, and other sales-related earnings.

[1] Radio: There were four public broadcasting stations and four privately-owned radio broadcast stations in 2007. It now provides six radio programs for FM, MW, and SW radio channels.

Television: All of the Turkish mainland broadcasts are accessible on the island. Northern Cyprus' state television is known as (BRT). BRT is also the first Turkish Cypriot television station. Northern Cyprus also has several private television and radio stations. Most TV channels in Northern Cyprus broadcast via satellite, and Türksat's satellite has a "Cyprus Packet."

Print media: Several Turkish-language local dailies are available, but mainland Turkish papers are mainly preferred. By far, the most widely circulated is Kbrs.  According to the US Department of State, opposition free media of the state frequently attacked the government in 2002.

Freedom of speech in TRNC media:

Being at war for decades, with a population of 326,000 people occupied by Turkey and people attempting to gain international recognition, one might expect the Turkish government or third-party countries involved in the dispute to suppress or influence the media in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

However, unlike many other liberal nations, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus' media is protected by state law, and access to the Internet is not limited. Independent media is active and reflects a wide range of viewpoints.

Some media institutions and journalists are openly critical of the government. Some journalists have expressed reservations about new privacy restrictions enacted in 2014.
